Shopping, Bartering, Bargaining…. Oh my!

Floating Market, just outside Bangkok

I hate malls.  Whether at home or on the road, I avoid them at all costs.

When travelling, I head straight for the open-air markets, bazaars, antique shops, and just about any place where I can sniff out unique, locally-made products and mingle with the locals.

I like the whole bargaining experience, too!  It can and should be a fun, win-win experience for both sides if you know how to play the “game.”

The Khan el-Kalili souk in Cairo, Egypt and the Floating Market in Bangkok are probably my favorites, but I seek out (and can usually find!) open-air markets in just about any country or island I visit.
