Airport Boredom? Here’s How We Beat It!

girls gone bored in osaka

This is why I love traveling with my peeps, Marie and Rebecca…

On our recent trip to Japan, we were stuck in the Osaka railway station, waiting to be picked up by our guide, who was late and still stuck in rush hour traffic.

After wasting an hour in a jam-packed restaurant, I suggested that we walk around and see if we could find a shopping opportunity.  It sure beats sitting around watching the clock (or eating another piece of cake!), and who knows what kind of adventure might be lurking around some unknown corner?

We set off, but after a few minutes, discovered that there really was not much to see or do in the station.  Wait!  I herded the girls into a convenience/pharmacy type of store – the only shopping venue to be found.

Not much here.  Morale was taking a nose-dive, so I had to think fast.  Voila! I found a three-pack of extreme false eyelashes.  I’m talking tarantula legs.  Those who know me understand that I can turn almost anything into a photo op.

Lashes in tow, we hightailed it into the public ladies’ room.  Like everything else in Japan, it was really small.  When I say small, I mean tiny.  We three squeezed in front of a two-sink vanity, and still, people had to squeeze by us to get to the water closets.

Did I mention the odd looks we got as we giggling “installed” the monster lashes?  It didn’t help that I nearly fell to the floor watching Rebecca – who never wears makeup – struggled valiantly to get her lashes in place.  Naturally, mine went on lickety-split since I’ve worn falsies before, so I tried to help Rebecca peel them off her eyelids and place them close to her lash line.  Good thing we were in the ladies room because honestly the whole scenario nearly made me pee in my pants.

We finally emerged from the restroom, very smugly I might add.  We did turn some heads, but I’m still not sure if it was because of the tarantulas on our eyes, or because we exuded so much confidence from having accomplished the impossible:  outrageous eyelashes and diminished doldrums.

A week in Japan, and this episode of airport boredom is one of my most memorable experiences!  Ah, it’s the simple things in life that we remember!

“You make everything so much fun,” said Marie.

Well, I do what I can.
