Note: On my first trip to Bali, I took a group tour, which I enjoyed. But if you truly want to experience the culture and beauty of Bali, you would have to do it on your own, with either a rental car/scooter, or a personal driver (I did that the second time) because the tours do not cover everything wonderful to see on the island, especially the best beaches, which are in the far south.

25 Monkey Forest
The Sacred Monkey Forest in Ubud is a lush jungle sanctuary filled with towering trees, ancient temples, and hundreds of playful macaques. Moss-covered statues and intricate stone carvings peek through dense greenery, creating a mystical, storybook atmosphere. Sunlight filters through the canopy, casting soft beams that make photos feel magical.
Monkeys roam freely and often interact with visitors, sometimes climbing onto shoulders or sneaking curious glances into bags. Their unpredictable nature adds excitement to your shots. It’s a way to mix wildlife, culture, and jungle scenery. I’m not overly fond of wild, cheeky monkeys, so this wasn’t my favorite experience, but others love it.

24 Lereng Agung
Lereng Agung offers one of the most peaceful and perfectly framed views of Mount Agung, Bali’s sacred volcano. Traditional split gates stand in the foreground, naturally guiding your eye toward the towering mountain beyond. The symmetry creates a visually satisfying composition that feels both spiritual and cinematic.
At sunrise, soft golden light bathes the landscape, highlighting the textures of the surrounding greenery. With fewer crowds than other viewpoints, it’s easy to take your time and capture serene, uninterrupted shots that reflect Bali’s quiet beauty. The delicious buffet adds an element of deliciousness to the experience.

Bali Hai Resort on Nusa Lembongan is a tropical paradise where every corner feels effortlessly photogenic. Palm trees sway gently over white sand beaches, while the ocean glows in shades of turquoise and deep blue. The relaxed island atmosphere adds a sense of calm to every photo.

22 Elephant Caves
Goa Gajah, or the Elephant Caves, is a fascinating blend of history, spirituality, and artistry. The cave entrance is carved into a dramatic stone face, with intricate details, creating a mysterious, slightly eerie focal point. Inside, the dim lighting adds depth and intrigue.
Outside, tranquil bathing pools with stone fountains and lush jungle surroundings provide contrast and balance. The combination of ancient carvings, water features, and greenery offers a variety of textures and moods, making it a rich and visually compelling photography location.
21 Uluwatu Temple
Uluwatu Temple sits dramatically on a cliff edge high above the Indian Ocean, offering sweeping views and powerful natural scenery. Waves crash far below, while narrow pathways lead to stunning vantage points along the coastline. The temple itself adds cultural depth and architectural beauty.
At sunset, the sky explodes with color, casting warm light over the cliffs and ocean. Stay for the Kecak Fire Dance, where flames, movement, and chanting create dynamic, storytelling images that capture both energy and tradition.
20 Mt. Batur

Tirta Empul (Pura) is a sacred water temple known for its purification rituals and spiritual significance. Rows of stone fountains pour crystal-clear water into pools where visitors take part in traditional cleansing ceremonies. The repetition creates visually striking patterns.
Surrounded by carved stone and tropical greenery, the temple feels both serene and powerful. Visitors dressed in sarongs add cultural authenticity to your images. Early mornings offer the best light and fewer crowds, allowing for more intimate and meaningful photography.

Morning is the best time to hike along the ridge, before the heat of the day sets in, and also for the soft morning light, which adds depth to the scenery. With fewer crowds and wide open views, it’s an ideal location for capturing movement, perspective, and a sense of tranquility that contrasts with Bali’s busier attractions.
14 Taman Ayun Temple
Taman Ayun Temple is a beautifully designed complex known for its symmetry and serene atmosphere. Multi-tiered pagodas rise above reflective water, creating balanced and harmonious compositions that are visually striking.
The surrounding gardens are lush and well-maintained, adding layers of greenery and color to your photos. Quiet pathways allow you to explore different angles at your own pace, making it a relaxing yet rewarding location for capturing architectural elegance.
13 Liyer Spirit House
Liyer Spirit House is a charming bamboo retreat overlooking lush rice fields, offering a peaceful and intimate setting. Its connection to the renowned medicine man Ketut Liyer, made famous by the movie “Eat, Pray, Love,” adds a deeper spiritual significance to the experience.
Ketut Liyer passed away in June 2016 at the age of 100. His son, Nyoman Latra, has taken over the family practice and continues to offer healing treatments and palm readings. I had a reading by his son in May 2015, with the father looking on and adding a comment here and there. The reading added a personal and meaningful element to my visit.
12 Barong & Keris Dance
The Barong & Keris Dance is a vibrant cultural performance that tells the story of the battle between good and evil. Performers wear elaborate masks and richly decorated costumes, bringing the narrative to life through expressive movement.

Made famous by the movie “Eat, Pray, Love,” Padang Padang Beach is a hidden gem accessed through a rock cliff passage that opens into a small, picturesque cove. The entrance itself creates a natural frame, adding depth and intrigue to your photos.
Inside, golden sand meets clear blue water, while rocky cliffs surround the beach. Surfers and sunbathers add life and movement to the scene. It’s a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation, offering a classic tropical setting with a unique twist.
10 Tulamben
Tulamben is a dream destination for underwater photography, best known for the USAT Liberty shipwreck resting just off the shore. Beneath the surface, vibrant coral, schools of fish, and textured metal create a colorful, otherworldly scene. I achieved my scuba certification here. Above the water, the black volcanic sand and calm sea provide unique visual elements.

9 Tirtu Gangga
Tirta Gangga is a stunning water palace filled with fountains, koi ponds, and elegant stone pathways. The famous stepping stones allow you to walk across the water, creating interactive and visually balanced compositions.
Koi fish swim beneath your feet, adding movement and color to your shots. The symmetry, reflections, and lush gardens surrounding the pools make every angle photogenic, blending architecture and nature seamlessly.

8 Suluban Beach
Suluban Beach is tucked beneath towering limestone cliffs and reached through a narrow rock passage that winds between rugged formations. At the entrance, mischievous monkeys often linger, watching visitors and occasionally attempting to grab loose items.
As you descend, cave-like openings reveal glimpses of the ocean, building anticipation. The beach itself features dramatic rock arches, crashing waves, and golden light, creating a wild and adventurous setting perfect for bold, cinematic photos.
7 Lanhagan Sweet
Lahangan Sweet offers breathtaking panoramic views of Mount Agung, combined with creative bamboo platforms and swings designed for photography. The elevated viewpoints create a feeling of floating above the landscape.
The surrounding mountains and forests stretch endlessly into the distance, adding scale and depth. With fewer crowds, you can take your time experimenting with angles. Sunrise brings soft pastel tones, making each shot feel peaceful and expansive.

Diamond Beach on Nusa Penida is known for its dramatic cliffs, bright white sand, and striking rock formations rising from the sea. The viewpoint from above offers a breathtaking perspective, especially when seen from the wild, extreme swing.
A steep staircase carved into the cliff provides multiple angles as you descend. The vibrant turquoise water and rugged landscape create bold, high-contrast images that stand out instantly.

2 Gate of Heaven
The Gate of Heaven at Lempuyang Temple is one of Bali’s most magical photo spots. The split gate frames Mount Agung perfectly, creating a symmetrical and visually powerful composition.
On clear days, the volcano stands tall in the background, while reflections, done with a mirror, add a surreal effect. Despite long waits, the final image is timeless and unforgettable.

26 Kelingking Beach
You’ve heard of Instagram vs. Reality? Well, this is it.
Kelingking Beach on Nusa Penida is instantly recognizable for its dramatic cliff shaped like a T-Rex head plunging into the ocean. From the viewpoint, vibrant turquoise water crashes against a narrow strip of white sand far below, creating a striking contrast that looks unreal in photos. The wind whips across the cliffs, adding movement to your shots. For the adventurous, a steep and rugged hike leads down to the beach, where the scale of the cliffs becomes even more impressive.
The reason why I did not include it in the main list is that it was sooooooooooo crowded, it was impossible to get a good photo.
27 Net Trampoline
The boutique hotel where I stayed just outside of Ubud had a very impressive feature. This “net trampoline” was cantilevered from our balcony over working rice fields. It was a bit intimidating inching my way out onto it, and I didn’t stay long, but it was worth the photo op. Sometimes you could see people working in the fields.
